Coming to Costa Rica for the billfish bite? Why not Quepos?

It’s going to get busy! Both charter boats and anglers are now lining up for the internationally-acclaimed billfish bite off Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast. Between December and April, thousands of anglers from around the world will visit Costa Rica to go after marlin and sailfish with top-notch charter captains.

Many will be heading to Los Sueños Marina near Jacó, whose sportfishing charter fleet has few if any rivals anywhere. Over the past 15 years, Los Sueños and the nearby beach resort of Jacó have eclipsed many other Costa Rican sportfishing destinations in popularity.

One destination that often got lost in the bright lights of Los Sueños is Quepos, just under an hour’s drive south. Many don’t know that Quepos was one of the first of Costa Rica’s many sportfishing destinations, especially in the last half of the 1970s and throughout the 1980s.

The story of how Quepos was discovered and evolved as a sportfishing destination is an entertaining one. Click here to find out.

Pez Vela Marina in Quepos offers a world-class sportfishing charter fleet

Quepos is now coming back into its own. The long-awaited and very upscale Pez Vela Marina has put Quepos back on the Costa Rica sportfishing map in bold capital letters. So if you are thinking about getting in on the upcoming season’s Central Pacific billfish bite, consider the Quepos/Pez Vela Marina option, especially if you are bringing the family along. There’s lots to do there besides fishing. Quepos is also home to one of Costa Rica’s most visited tourist attractions: the incredibly beautiful Manuel Antonio National Park.

Quepos has a very experienced sportfishing fleet. To catch the billfish bite, boats at Pez Vela Marina will either go north to the Ventiseis (a natural sea mount rising to 80m (90 yards) of the surface, or south towards the Furuno bank.

Depending on how many will be fishing and their budgets, anglers considering fishing at Pez Vela Marina in Quepos can choose from a host of charter boats with top-notch, experienced captains. FishCostaRica can recommend a few here, but there are far more excellent charter boats and captains that we can also suggest.

For instance, there is this 46ft Guthrie Flybridge with experienced local captain Glenn Morales. She will take six anglers, but up to 10 can fish in a pinch. Anglers can also fish on this excellent, newly refurbished 44ft Luhrs Convertible with Captain Luis Mosquera, who hails from Venezuela.

If you are looking for something a bit smaller, there is this 36ft Hatteras with Captain Mikel Ponce. And going down further in size, we can suggest this 31ft Sportfisher with well-known and respected Captain Manuel Gabuardi. Finally, if you are one or two, we can put you on this 26ft Fish Nautique Center Console with Captain Merlin Badilla.

Of course, the billfish bite is the big attraction, but there are a lot of other gamefish species in the sea off Quepos, both offshore and inshore.
