The fish off Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast are still biting
As often happens in May, the billfish bite off Costa Rica’s Central Pacific coast tapers off from the world-class bite of previous months. But that doesn’t mean that marlin and sailfish suddenly disappear altogether, or that there aren’t other gamefish you can catch.
For instance, anglers on the 46ft CaribSea out of Pez Vela Marina in Quepos with Captain Glenn Morales released two big blue marlin, and then went back to the marina early. A couple of days later, anglers with Glenn didn’t get any billfish, but caught eight tasty grouper and some other bottom fish.
At Los Sueños Marina, anglers with Captain Michael Alligood on the 34ft Epic released this blue marlin, and had a sailfish double-header. Earlier, anglers on the Epic went 1-1 on sailfish, and kept a small dorado (mahi-mahi), and a few nice yellowfin tuna.

You can still catch billfish, like this blue marlin released on the Epic
Up north, in Flamingo, anglers on the 31ft Gamefisher II with Captain Junior Bustos got their billfish: a 250lb blue marlin. They also caught a 45lb dorado and five yellowfin tuna, most in the 20-30 pound range, and one about 50lbs.
Inshore fishing is never dull, and there are all sorts of gamefish you can target. All of them will give you a great battle, and also make superb eating. For instance, anglers with Captain Juan Sirias on the 26ft Fish Hunter out of Herradura Bay beside Los Sueños Marina caught several snapper and grouper, which were immediately filleted for the dinner table.
