SPORT  FISHING SAMARA GUANAMAR

Samara, Guanamar and Carillo are three little Pacific Ocean beach resort villages virtually right next to each other on the south central part of the Nicoya Peninsula. If you can picture a tiny bay where the three are situated as an isosceles triangle, Samara would be at the bottom left, Guanamar would be at the top, and Carillo bottom right.

Stay in Samara, pick up Guanamar fishing boat

The three communities each have excellent angler-friendly hotels from modest to upscale; restaurants, bars and boutiques where you can enjoy your stay and fish Costa Rica in a relaxed, laid back manner. Traveling for Carillo fishing, Samara fishing or Guanamar fishing is simple: from San José, it is a four-hour drive across the Tempisque River bridge and then through Nicoya; from Liberia international airport, it is a two-hour drive through Santa Cruz and Nicoya. There are also daily 45-minute commuter flights to the area from San José.

Anglers staying at a hotel in one of the three resorts might pick up their Costa Rica fishing charter at one of the two other communities, depending on where the particular boat is moored. For instance, you might be staying in Samara, but your Costa Rican sport fishing boat nominally operates out of Carillo, 20-25 minutes away by cab. Contrariwise, you might be staying at a Carillo fishing hotel, and your Costa Rica sportfishing captain has his boat in Samara or Guanamar.

Flamingo boats fish Carillo, Guanamar and Samara

Sport fishing is only one of the activites you can enjoy while visiting Samara. Many Costa Rican sport fishing charter captains bring their boats to fish out of Carillo, Guanamar and Samara from Flamingo and the Papagayo Bay area between January and April to escape the Papagayo winds that sweep over the northern part of Guanacaste.

In general, Carillo fishing, Guanamar fishing and Samara fishing offer excellent offshore and inshore Costa Rica fishing action all year around. All of Costa Rica’s favored gamefish can be caught 365 days a year. The bay and coastline around the three ocean villages are always rich in baitfish.

Marlin bite peaks January-March

Charter a fishing boat for an adventure in Samara.Carillo, Guanamar and Samara enjoy a particularly good Marlin bite between January and March. For some reason, Blue Marlin, Black Marlin and Striped Marlin often bypass the South and Central Pacific areas and congregate offshore near the three Costa Rica fishing communities during this period.

The Blue, Black and Marlin bite peaks in January, and superb fishing lasts for three months. Anglers on Costa Rica fishing charters out of Samara, Carillo and Guanamar will find that the peak Sailfish bite will peak a couple of months later. Yellowfin Tuna come in at the beginning of May. Costa Rica fishing charters will see more Dorado when the rains begin in July/August and the rivers spill reeds, branches and logs into the ocean. When the water is clear, a Wahoo might take the hook.

Carillo, Guanamar and Samara offer superb inshore fishing

Inshore fishing is excellent all year round. Anglers enjoying Carillo fishing, Guanamar fishing or Samara fishing can expect to see Cubera Snapper, Rock Snapper, Mullet Snapper and Yellow Snapper; Roosterfish; Grouper; Amberjack; Jack Crevalle, Horse-Eye Jack; Blue Jack and Sierra Mackerel, among other inshore fish.
