Sportfishing in Flamingo, Costa Rica

Fishing in the Flamingo area is a must if you are visiting this beautiful area of Costa Rica

FLAMINGO

The North Pacific beach resort town of Flamingo, like Tamarindo just to its south, is one of the mainstays of sportfishing in Costa Rica. Its mile-long, crescent-shaped beach is as beautiful as any of the other famous beaches in Costa Rica.

With its gleaming light beige sand, Flamingo Beach in the province of Guanacaste is the perfect setting for some exciting Costa Rica fishing adventures. It hosts some of the most beautiful hotels, homes and condominiums that Costa Rica has to offer. Many gorgeous villas dot the long Playa Flamingo beachfront, as do excellent restaurants, brightly-colored boutiques, small supermarkets and other amenities.

Flamingo fishing easy to reach from Liberia or San José

Charter a fishing boat for a half day or a full day in Sportfishing capital Flamingo Many anglers booking Flamingo fishing charters will find it best to fly into Costa Rica’s second international airport in Liberia, and then travel to Flamingo, about 35 minutes away, by cab or minivan.

Flamingo can also be easily reached from San José: Costa Rican sport fishing enthusiasts can travel either by a four-hour trip overland past Puntarenas and then across the Tempisque bridge through the Nicoya Peninsula; or on a 50-minute commuter flight to Tamarindo, and then a 30-minute trip by cab or minivan.

Excellent Flamingo sportfishing fleet

If you decide on Flamingo fishing, there are many top-notch, experienced Costa Rica sportfishing captains with boats in the 31 to 42ft range. One of the Costa Rican sport fishing charter captains who kept Flamingo on the Costa Rica fishing map for more than 20 years was the legendary Sonny Kocsis on his 31ft Wet Ass II. Sonny was a firebrand; Marlin fishing was his preference, and his anglers set several IGFA Marlin world records.

The Flamingo fishing seasons parallel those of other Guanacaste sportfishing destinations. All types of fish can be caught 365 days a year, but as elsewhere in the country, the Costa Rica fishing calendar in the Flamingo area has its peak times.

Flamingo billfish bite peaks in summer

Fish the flamingo area and bring home the catch, local restaurants will even prepare your fish for you.The big billfish bite begins in May, and continues through September and often a bit later. The top Flamingo fishing months for Blue, Black and Striped Marlin are usually July and August. Yellowfin Tuna are also caught all year round, but anglers coming to fish Costa Rica will find that the season really gets going in June, and the really big Yellowfin 100lbs and more arrive in late August/September.

Dorado (Mahi-Mahi) prefer the rainy months of August, September and October. Inshore fishing in the Flamingo area is superb all year round.

Flamingo fishing can be dicey in January-March

A piece of advice: between January and the end of March, the Papagayo winds sweep across the Flamingo area. Flamingo is a less-sheltered bay than is Tamarindo to the south, and during the above period Flamingo fishing captains will not venture offshore when the winds are up. Even some inshore charters might be cancelled. A lot of the Flamingo fishing captains take their boats down to Carillo/Guanamar or Nosara to escape the winds.

So, we recommend that if you already have your stay booked in the Flamingo area between January and end of March, but are dead set on fishing offshore but haven’t yet booked your charter, an option might be Tamarindo. It’s only a 35-minute drive. Your Costa Rica offshore sport fishing charter out of Tamarindo is a lot less likely to be confined to an inshore trip than will your Flamingo fishing charter.

If you are booking a fishing trip to the Flamingo area there are plenty of condos and single family residences available for rent.
