Below is a sample eight-day, seven-night Custom Eco-Vacation Itinerary that takes you to the Arenal Volcano, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve and an exciting day of White Water Rafting on the Pacuare River:
COSTA RICA CUSTOM ECO-VACATION ITINERARY
Day 1 – Arrival in San José. Private A/C minivan transfer with an experienced, bilingual driver from the International airport to an attractive downtown boutique hotel.
Day 2 – After-breakfast transfer by private A/C minivan with an experienced, bilingual driver (about three hours), commercial or private charter flight (25 minutes) to ARENAL VOLCANO/LA FORTUNA. Overnight at a first-class hotel with scenic volcano view. Afternoon and evening free to enjoy the volcano, its awesome rumbling, sparks and lava flows by night.
Day 3 – After breakfast: EXPLORE THE VENADO CAVES. Descend to the Earth’s inner-depths during a two-hour trek with a bilingual guide through underground waterfalls and smooth, stone passage-ways – see prehistoric, marine fossils and exotic cave formations. Afternoon you are free to relax at one of the local hot springs* or take other tours, such as horseback trips to the nearby RIO FORTUNA WATERFALLS, or the late afternoon ‘LIQUID LAVA’ tour where you hike with a bilingual naturalist guide through the lush rainforest near the base of the Arenal Volcano. On clear nights you can see the amazing lava flow of Central America’s most-active volcano. Later, take a relaxing dip in natural hot springs and enjoy the area’s specialty tropical drinks at a swim-up bar.
Day 4 – After breakfast: HORSEBACK TRAVEL TO MONTEVERDE. Travel the old-fashioned way – this horseback ride is recommended for horse lovers and adventurers of all levels. Ride along a very scenic and safe trail (your luggage will be transported by car) through the lush and beautiful rainforest circling Lake Arenal where you will get several glorious views of the Arenal Volcano and probably encounter toucans, Montezuma Oropendolas, sloths, monkeys, the elusive ‘paca’ and other tropical flora and fauna. The lake trail is safe all year-round, and you will have excellent – and gentle – horses. Check in at a first-class hotel near the world-famous Monteverde cloud forest reserve. Afternoon and evening free to relax and explore the reserve.
Day 5 – After breakfast: the all-day SELVATURA COMBINATION PACKAGEwhich includes an exiting canopy/zipline tour; a 1.9-mile walk through the cloud forest over eight bridges whose lengths range between 150 and 510 feet at altitudes between 36 and 180 feet; and tours of the Serpentarium, Butterfly Farm, Insect Museum and Orchid Farm. Arrive back at your hotel at about 4:30 PM.
Day 6 – Morning free to relax or to do your own exploration* of the reserve and Monteverde area. Mid-afternoon private A/C minivan transfer (about three and a half hours) with an experienced, bilingual driver to San José. Check in at the boutique hotel.
Day 7 – Early morning: CLASS II-IV WHITE WATER RAFTING ON THE PACUARE RIVER. Pick-up between 6 and 6:30 AM. Travel by scenic coaster to the Pacuare River where expert river guides will give you a quick course in white water rafting and safety before you begin your 18-mile journey through tropical forests with breathtaking scenery populated by toucans, parrots and other birds. After lunch, paddle through more adrenaline-pumping rapids and marvel at amazing scenery such as the narrow canyon of Dos Montañas. Arrive back in San José at about 5 PM.
Day 8 – Departure Day: Private A/C minivan transfer with an experienced, bilingual driver to the International airport for your flight home.
